Writing it down

Today is my day off from work, so I should start writing on my legacy project. Started thinking about my childhood yesterday and made myself uncomfortable. Started thinking about Valentines in grade school - like Charlie Brown - I wanted to get Valentines; but, I didn't think anyone would give me any. I was so surprised to find that my classmates put Valentines in my box! So many things I didn't know when I went to school - like the alphabet. Mom figured they would teach me what I needed to know at school - that wasn't her job. Was that just her or was that the way mothers were in the 50s?

Legacy writing group

We are starting a new writing group at the library and it is to encourage us to get our stuff together and write down our personal histories. It kind of goes along with the oral history; but, different. Should be fun to take a walk down memory lane, I'll just hit the high lights and leave out the everyday boring stuff.

Once you start thinking about life and getting all introspective it is amazing the details that follow. Trick is to have pen and paper handy to get it all down.

The clock is ticking

I have what has been called "oral historian anxiety syndrome" even though I haven't yet been an oral historian. I feel the time slipping away and with it the stories of our older generations. How do we as a community capture the memories before it is to late? We must first begin with a plan and that is what I hope to accomplish by calling a meeting on Jan17,2011. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am not the only one who feels this anxiety and that citizens will be knocking down the door to join me in this cause! Kamiah,Idaho - is such a nice place to live and it has the best library. Of course, as the library manager I would think so, what better place to begin a history project. Unless the historical society wants to take on the project - I don't care who does the work as long as the stories are collected and they stay as part of our community record.
